The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac by Sharma Shields is a stunning novel about multi-generational trauma, family responsibility (or lack thereof), identity, and the search for Sasquatch.

Spanning one man’s lifetime, the novel moves fluidly through the perspectives of various family members and others outside the family, creating a rich, layered portrait of their relationships, dynamics, and emotional lives.

When Eli is a young child, his mother abandons him and his father to live in the woods with a Sasquatch referred to as Mr. Krantz. From that moment on, Eli is shaped by both the sting of this betrayal and an obsessive desire to find Mr. Krantz.

Every character in this novel is deeply flawed yet vividly recognizable, their personalities layered, weathered, and complex. The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac is a gorgeous example of modern Pacific Northwest Gothic, blending the psychological with the magical. It leaves the reader with a barrage of emotions as intricate and distinctive as the novel itself.

Highly recommend.
